Kilburn - "Fit for a Queen"

Location

  • Kilburn is located at the beginning of north London, and is administrated by three London boroughs (Brent on its west boundary, Camden on its east, with Westminster to the south where it becomes Maida Vale and further south the Edgware Road).
  • Four railway stations support the area (namely Kilburn, Kilburn High Road, and Kilburn Park).
  • Its main thoroughfare is the Kilburn High Road, once the Roman road of Watling Street and now classified as the A5.
  • The area once which had a large Irish population has in recent years become more multicultural.

Historical Facts

  • The first recordings of ‘Cuneburna’ (Kilburn) date back to 1134 with reference to a priory run by Augustinian canonesses built on the site of the cell of a hermit known as Godwyn. During the reign of Henry I, he built a hermitage on the banks of the Kelebourne (‘Kele’ is thought to have meant royal or cattle, and ‘bourne’ was the Anglo-Saxon word for a stream) – this is probably where the area takes from. The priory was dissolved in 1536 by Henry VIII.
  • In 1851 the stream, by then known as the River Westbourne, was piped underground and now empties into the River Thames at Chelsea via a pipe above the platforms of Sloane Square underground station.
  • The High Road grew from a track, used as a route between the ancient Roman settlements of Canterbury and St Albans, was referred to as ‘Watling Street’ under Roman rule. This track was later paved and became part of the road to Dover and became popular as a resting place for pilgrims.
